The work world is changing rapidly, and the freedom to choose what work you want and where you want to do it is a major benefit of freelancing. A recent FlexJobs survey found that 56% of respondents cited the general concept of work flexibility as one of their main reasons for making the switch to freelance. For many people, it’s about being able to explore new career opportunities, or even travel the world if they so desire.
The reality is that working a traditional full-time job can be restrictive. It can be challenging to balance a life that includes commuting, getting ready for work, and running weekend or vacation errands related to your career. You can find yourself stuck in a time prison and unable to do other things that you really want to do in life. This is why so many people decide to escape the 9-to-5 grind and make a change in their lives.
While it’s possible to earn a living through traditional employment, you may need to be patient and save up a significant amount of money before you can make the jump. This is a great model for more risk-averse individuals. The key to success with this model is extreme frugality and a willingness to give up reward systems such as weekend outings and vacation time. And it’s important to be aware that you might have to work for 10-15 years before you reach your goal of being financially independent.
Another way to escape the 9-to-5 grind is to transition from a full-time job to freelance work in increments. This can be done by discussing with your manager to shift a few hours from your regular schedule to accommodate a more flexible work arrangement. You could also take on an additional project through a platform such as Upwork or Fiverr. This type of side hustle can help you grow your brand, establish a reputation and portfolio, and create the foundation for your freelance career.
A more radical approach to escaping the 9-to-5 is to quit your job and become a digital nomad. This requires you to have a strong enough skill set to create a business that rewards your expertise and pays the bills while traveling around the world. While this option is more daunting, it’s not impossible for people with the right skillset to accomplish.
No matter which of these approaches you choose to escape the 9-to-5 grind, the most important thing is to determine your WHY. What is it about your current lifestyle that makes you want to break out of the time prison and earn a living in a different way?
The answer to this question will help you figure out the best way to achieve your goals. You may discover that you’re more motivated by a desire to travel the world or be your own boss, or you might simply have to do something to get out of a dead-end job that you hate.

Hi, I'm John Breitfeller, I got my first desktop computer around June of 2001 from Gateway. I started hearing about people making money from home on their computers.
I originally started searching about learning how to invest to grow a nest egg. I got sidetracked by people talking about making money with affiliate marketing.
I've been trying to create a second income from affiliate marketing since 2001, and let me tell you, it ain't easy. Unless you find someone who is successful and isn't going to sell you some BS that doesn't work, just so he can make money off of you.
